Today President Trump signed a presidential order to roll back the halt of two controversial oil pipelines, the Keystone XL and the Dakota Access. 

This reversal comes after, under the Obama administration, the State Department rejected TransCanada's application for a permit to complete the Keystone XL pipeline. Then, after a growing backlash from Native American groups from across the country and environmentalists, former President Obama put a stop to the Dakota pipeline. 

While signing the reversal in the Oval Office, Trump said that his administration is "going to renegotiate some of the terms" of the Keystone pipeline. In addition, he vowed that the resurrected project would be built with American steel, with American jobs. 

Trump also signed an order to relax restrictions on environmental protections. According to NPR he said will streamline "the incredibly cumbersome, long, horrible permitting process and reducing regulatory burdens for domestic manufacturing," and he says will expedite environmental reviews and approvals "for high-priority infrastructure projects."

All of this new rhetoric, and executive order action, has caused major disruption across the country. There have been spontaneous protests in response to these rollbacks in Seattle and New York as of this evening. No further information has been released to the media regarding any protests as of publishing time.
